Coagulase Negative Staph (CNS)

CNS does not produce a severe mastitis and it usually responds to treatment. CNS infection can become a problem in young herds or after purchase of a group of cows in milk; it is usually seen in young cows up to lactation 3.

CNS infections can be a problem in heifers coming into milk – look at heifer environment, however the body develops immunity after exposure and hence is a young cow problem or problem after introduction to a naïve herd.

In herds with a history of CNS infection it is best to treat young cows on the basis of a rising SCC.

Control of contagious mastitis.
